Measure out multiple quantities of premixed ingredients and store the prepared premix with a copy of the recipe so that whenever required you could prepare it easily. As the cold winters pass through our doors, the craving for a sweet, rich and warm moong dal halwa tugs at our hearts. Moong dal halwa is a rich dessert made with yellow lentil (moong dal), sugar and ghee. This is a popular and rich halwa recipe from North India. Moong dal halwa is not only delicious and fragrant but it has a good texture makes it a perfect festive dessert. Its melt-in-your-mouth texture, unique aroma and taste make it very special. Although Moong ki dal ka halwa is one of the most decadent and delicious halwas out there but it takes a lot of time to make. If you have a moong dal halwa premix in hand, it can be made quickly and without any fuss. So today I am sharing here recipe of moong dal halwa mix or instant moong dal powder for making quick halwa with less efforts.

  1. Wash and soak moong dal for about 3-4 hours.

  2. Drain the water properly and then spread dal over a kitchen towel/cloth. Let moong dal dry completely for 1-2 hours.

  3. When dal is completely dry it is ready for roasting.

  4. In a wok add ghee and let it melt over low flame. 

  5. Add moong dal in it, roast it over low flame till it slightly change its color to golden and became aromatic. Stir dal continuously while roasting.

  6. After dal is roasted turn off the flame, stir for 2-3 minutes more and then let it coo down completely. 

  7. Then add dal in a grinder/mixi jar and grind it coarsely. 

  8. Add roasted chopped nuts and mix well.

  9. Store in any airtight jar and you may keep it for about 1 month. If you will put it in the refrigerator its shelf life will be increased for 3-4 months easily.

  10. ___________ For Preparing Halwa with Moong dal Premix _____________

  11. In a heavy bottom pan add ghee along with halwa premix. Roast it for 1-2 minutes over low medium flame.

  12. Add milk, turn the flame to high and mix well.

  13. Stir continuously till the milk starts to boil and gradually the milk will start to absorb in dal.

  14. When the milk is almost absorbed add sugar, turn the flame to medium and cook the halwa with sugar.

  15. Gradually the ghee will start to release from halwa, add about 1 teaspoon more ghee and some chopped nuts now, mix well.

  16. Cover the pot and let halwa cook over medium flame, stir in between.

  17. Add 1 teaspoon more while cooking, give a good stir to the halwa. Let it come to your required consistency but do not make it too thick as it will dry a bit after cooling down.

  18. Add cardamom powder, mix, turn off the flame and your tasty instant moong dal halwa is ready.
